1. How do I change my major from pre-major to major? ( Check your catalog year for impaction criteria)
a. Complete Art 100, 101, 102, 103, 258 and 259 with a C or better (or for Art History, complete Art 100, 101, 258 and 259 with a C or better)
b. Have a GPA of 2.75 for graphic design and multimedia majors and 2.5 for all other art majors and art history.
c. Provide documentation that you have met the above criteria, a degree evaluation and/or unoficial transcripts.
d. Fill out an application which can be found in the School of Art office Art-505 or the Art Advising office Art-509.
e. Fill out and Declaration of Undergraduate Change or major or minor form, also found School of Art office Art-505 or the Art Advising office Art-509.
f. Bring all the above documentation and forms to the School of Art office Art-505 or the Art Advising office Art-509.
2. Do I need a C or better in each class I take?
No, You need a C or better in classes that require a C or better as a pre-requisite or to satisfy the requirement to get into the major. Art 100, 101, 102, 103, 258, 259, 241, 243, are some classes in which you need a C or better.
3. How do I get into the pre-major?
a. Fill out and Declaration of Undergraduate Change of Major or Minor form, also found School of Art office A-505 or the Art Advising office Art-509.
b. Bring the form to the School of Art office Art-505 or the Art Advising office Art-509.
4.Do I need to finish the preparation for the major (the lower division requirements) before taking upper divison or major classes?
In most cases, you need to be declared as a major before taking upper division courses in the major but in some cases, if you are a junior (completed 60 units), and you have taken the pre-requisites, you may take upper division courses. Check the footnotes in the class schedule to find any restrictions on registration.
5. Can I take a pre-requiste for a class and the class at the same time.
No.
6. Is their a foreign language requirement for art majors.
There is a foreign language requirement if you are a Studio Arts emphasis or an Art History emphasis, but not for the other Art and Design emphasis areas.
7. Does the School have a photography major emphasis?
No, we do not offer an emphasis in Photography but we do offer a few classes for art, graphic design and multimedia majors.
8. Is a D- considered a passing grade
Yes (but in a prerequisite course, you need a C or better in most cases)
9. Within the School of Art, Design and Art History, can I major on one emphasis and minor in another?
All emphases in the School of Art (except Art History) are considered the same major, Art, so you cannot major and minor in the same subject. Interdiscplinary studies are encouraged and it is possible to study in multiple emphasis areas. See an advisor regarding your academic plan. Courses of study can be customized. It is possible to major in a studio art emphasis and minor in Art History and vise a versa.
10. As an entering Freshman, am I required to have a computer?
No.
11. What happens if I stop attending a class and do not drop?
You will get a U for the class which is equal to an F.
12. How many hours per week outside of class should I plan for each three unit class?
Six to nine hours.
