The study and appreciation of art requires an active form of looking
and seeing, a process that demands not only the eyes but also the mind,
the emotions and the intellect. You will have the chance to engage yourself
in this unique type of activity with the four gallery visits required for
this course and the reports that you will write on each gallery visit.
This site is uniquely designed to assist you in the preparation and participation
of this activity as well as provide a guide for the preparation and realization
of your paper on each exhibition you visit. For this kind of activity,
you will have to invest some time and effort.
Directions: You are to make 4 gallery visits and write 4 reports on
4 single pieces of art. You will write one report per gallery. The deliverables
for the four gallery visits are:
- Four reports that are no less than 300 words each stapled together
(you must also keep a copy of the reports). The reports must be turned
in together on the last day of class, no sooner, no later. Credit will
not be given for any of the reports unless all 4 are handed in on the due
date. The exhibitions you will visit are:
- San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art
- Museum of Photographic Arts
- The SDSU University Gallery (you must write 2 reports on 2 exhibitions
from this gallery).
Each report must contain:
| 1 |
Your name and your Art 157 class section. |
| 2 |
The admission receipt from the exhibition (if available). |
| 3 |
The location, date and topic of the exhibition. |
| 4 |
The artist's information should include the name, background (if available),
andlocation (where they live and work). |
| 5 |
A brief explanation of the exhibition and the gallery setting. |
| 6 |
You are expected to report on the kind
of art and its applicable elements, principles, and any historical,
cultural and/or social significance. |
| 7 |
In concluding your paper I want you to focus your personal
observations and feelings on the single work of art that you selected
to write on. If you choose, you may include a sketch, photograph or picture
of a work from the exhibition. |
Each report must be:
