General Information

The Furniture Design program at San Diego State University emphasizes woodworking techniques geared toward furniture design and construction. While the core of the curriculum is based on traditional woodworking, it also emphasizes the development of ideas and designs that parallel current issues in art and design. Technique and creativity are areas that are stressed equally. In addition to current issues, history of furniture plays an important role in understanding the development of furniture design.

The teaching format here is based on lectures, demonstrations, and slide presentations by the faculty and visiting artists. Visiting artists for the furniture program over the past ten years include: Thomas Hucker, Michael Hurwitz, Gail Fredell, Dakota Jackson, Rosanne Somerson, Tom Loeser, Albert Paley, John Cederquist, Kimberly Kelzer, Bob Trotman, Roy Christopher, Robert Brady, and Hisako Sekijima. While furniture design is the main focus for the program, other approaches with the materials are also welcomed and encouraged. In addition, the idea of designing furniture and/or sculpture using non-conventional materials such as steel, glass, concrete and found objects is explored.

Professional Goals for Students

Students are encouraged to look at a wide range of possibilities in terms of a profession in the field of woodworking. This program is geared toward preparing them with a complete portfolio that is designed to fit their intentions when they complete the program. There will be some students who will wish to work in a design firm, either in interior design or architectural design. Some students will go into production shops, often doing contract work for other designers and professionals. Others will have smaller shops that specialize in custom furniture, set design, and commission work. Still others may go into teaching, often augmenting their income by doing commission work for private clients and participating in gallery exhibitions.
