The School of Art, Design, and Art History is committed to excellence in the visual arts and design, intellectual development, interdisciplinary research, and creative growth. The faculty, professionally active artists, designers, scholars, critics and educators, seek to develop a high degree of professional competence in future artists, art historians, art educators and designers within the rich environment of a large, culturally diverse urban university. The School strives to assume a leadership role in the visual arts and design by serving as a cultural resource for San Diego State University, the Southern California and Baja community, and the related professions.
The School of Art, Design, and Art History is comprised of 24 tenured and tenure track faculty prominent in scholarship and creativity nationally and internationally. The full-time faculty is complemented by 40 lecturers and 20 teaching associates. The faculty and staff are responsible for the education of 1200 undergraduate and 66 graduate majors. The School received full impacted status in Fall 2002. The School expects that these control measures will ensure consistent quality among students and an appropriate enrollment in courses with unmet demand. The School is currently developing ways to monitor and assess the affects of impaction.
The University Art Gallery and two student exhibition spaces, the Flor y Canto Gallery and the Everett Gee Jackson Gallery, are located within the School. Also within the School is the university art supply store, Art, Etc.
The School staff includes two Equipment Technicians, one Visual Resource Specialist II, one Information Technology Consultant, two Administrative Support Assistants, and one Administrative Support Coordinator.
Our primary goal is to educate our students in the highest criteria of creative endeavor as it is practiced today. We encourage the exchange of ideas between creative disciplines, through which students can begin to work productively within a truly multidisciplinary learning context. The School of Art, Design and Art History strives to establish an environment that bridges disciplines that have historically been seen as separate artistic endeavors, by providing access to all of the intellectual and physical resources within the entire school.
The School of Art, Design, and Art History offers the B.A, M.A, and M.F.A. degrees in the visual arts. While focused on the interdisciplinary nature of contemporary art practice, the School includes concentrations in Art (ceramics, furniture, metals, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, textiles), Design (graphic design, interior design, multimedia), and Art History (nineteenth century, modern and contemporary western art, Asian art and history of museums). The School is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD) and the Foundation for Interior Design Education Research (FIDER).
