Director's Statement
I don't know about you, but as I read the news I daily ask myself why are there not more creative minds quoted about world events? When the world's issues seem so intractable, where are the artists and designers who spend their lives solving problems with "outside the box" thinking? Of course the artists and designers are working continuously to make the world more interesting, often solving great social problems along the way. But the society generally tries to solve its problems using methods that have often failed before. I once heard that one definition of madness is, continually trying the same action but expecting different outcomes. I am happy to welcome you back to another semester of learning to exercise your creative instincts. It seems to me that the world can scarcely wait for you to get going and be as productive as you can be. I hope this is a great new year for each of you and that you find that you are thriving as never before.

Dinh Q. L: After the War
New Photo Weavings and Video Installation by Vietnamese Artist Dinh Q. L
January 30 through March 1, 2008.
Dinh Q. L will present a slide lecture on Friday, February 1 at 6:00 p.m. in Room 100 of SDSU's Nasatir Hall.
A reception for the artist will follow from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. at the University Art Gallery.
The slide lecture and reception are free and open to the public.Dinh Q. L: After the War will feature ten large-scale photo-weavings completed by the artist in 2006 and 2007, as well as a four-channel video installation created in 2006. The photo-weavings examine the quickening pace of change in Vietnam, as the country negotiates between developing a free-market society and maintaining a socialist ideology. In these works, corporate logos and commercial packaging from a variety of Western products, now ubiquitous in Vietnam, infiltrate iconic documentary images from the Vietnam War. L's video installation The Imaginary Country, produced in collaboration with artists Tuan Andrew Nguyen and Ha Thuc Phu Nam, juxtaposes two generations affected by the Vietnamese Diaspora: the older generation of L's parents, which made the difficult decision to leave everything behind for the possibility of a better future in a foreign land, and the younger generation of the artist himself, which is returning to live in Vietnam.
