Biographical Information

Joanne Hayakawa received a BA degree from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and a MFA from the University of Washington, Seattle. Her work has been exhibited throughout the country in invitational as well as juried exhibitions. She has had solo exhibitions in Tampa, Florida, Los Angeles, Newark, Delaware, Knoxville, Tennessee, and San Diego (most notably at Quint Contemporary Art, La Jolla, Canon Gallery, Carlsbad, California, and Hyde Gallery, La Mesa, California. Her work has been included in many books, and periodicals. Her work is included in several collections, and she has received critical reviews from Robert L. Pincus, Elaine Levin and Peter Frank. Finally, she has lectured on her work and public art most recently on the west coast and Italy, Faenza and Cortona.

For the past four years, Joanne Hayakawa has also served as one of fifteen Commissioners for the San Diego Commission for Art and Culture, invited by Victoria Hamilton, Executive Director of the Commission and appointed by Mayor, Jerry Sanders. As a Commissioner, she also sits on the Public Art Committee, The Strategic Outreach Committee and Communications Advisory Committee, and the Funding Committee for the Commission.
