Graduate Application

We are pleased to learn of your interest in our graduate program and offer the following for your consideration. We offer two degree programs, the Master of Art (MA) and the Master of Fine Arts (MFA). Each applicant determines the degree program they will enter. Applications will be evaluated using the same standards of acceptance for either degree option.

The MFA is the terminal degree most appropriate for formal education of the studio artist and in preparation for college or university teaching. It is a 60 semester unit program and usually requires five or six semesters (about three years) to complete. Students specialize in either Ceramics; Textiles; Furniture Design and Woodworking; Jewelry and Metalwork; Interior Design, Graphic Design, Painting/Printmaking (including drawing and photographic processes); or Sculpture. The MA degree is a 30 semester unit program requiring three to four semesters for completion. This advanced degree is for those who do not have the time required for the MFA and do not need the terminal degree. Please refer to the individual “Areas of Study” in the navigation bar above for more detailed information on the programs we offer.

A limited number of Teaching Associate positions as well as Graduate Assistantships are available, usually after a semester in residence and by faculty determination. The SDSU Financial Aid Office can supply information concerning other assistance. They can be reached at (619) 594-6422.

Art History offers only the M.A. degree. The M.A. degree is comprised of 30 units of graduate study and is typically completed in two years.
