MA & MFA DEGREE, STUDIO ARTS Admission to Graduate Study

All students must satisfy general requirements for admission to the University with classified graduate standing, as described in the SDSU Graduate Bulletin. In general, students must have completed a bachelor's degree in studio art or the equivalent from an accredited institution, including twelve units of art history, six units of which comprise a survey of the history of Western Art. A grade point average of 3.25 or better in upper division art courses is required. Students must also be able to show they are adequately advanced to carry out projects that measure up to graduate standards. This requirement is measured by a formal presentation (the Graduate Review) of a portfolio of examples of the candidate's work to the graduate faculty in the area of emphasis. A statement of the candidate's objectives in the graduate program should accompany this presentation. If it is determined the student is capable of doing graduate art work, he/she may be permitted to begin such work even though he/she has not completed an appropriate undergraduate major in art. Admission to the Art graduate degree program is limited to the Fall semester. Applications and portfolios for the annual Graduate Review must be submitted to the Graduate Coordinator by February 1st.

SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS - MASTER OF ARTS DEGREE, M. A.

In addition to meeting the requirements for classified graduate standing and the basic requirements for the master's degree as described in Part Two of the Graduate Bulletin, all students must complete a graduate program of a minimum of 30 units. The program must include at least 24 units in art from courses listed in the Graduate Bulletin as acceptable on the master's degree program in art, of which at least 16 units must be in 600-700 numbered courses. Those electing studio areas must complete a minimum of 18 units in the area of specialization. One course in Art 760 or 770 series, Art 694 and Art 799A thesis are required. Not more than a total of six units in Art 798 will be accepted. A creative project accompanied by a written report is required as fulfillment of Art 799A. In conjunction with this project, each candidate for the degree must present an exhibition of representative graduate work.

SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS - MASTER OF FINE ARTS DEGREE, M.F.A.

Candidates for the MFA, in addition to meeting requirements for classified graduate standing, must complete a 60-unit graduate program that includes a minimum of 45 units at the 600 and 700 level. Art 694, 760, 791 and 792 are required. Six additional units must be included in art history, art criticism and aesthetics courses. Nine units must be included on the program from studio electives outside the area of emphasis or electives in other departments. Art 799A, thesis project, must be included on the program. No more than 15 units of graduate work may be transferred from another institution. Requests for more than six units must be approved by a committee of representatives from the area of emphasis. Applicants holding an MA degree in Studio Arts from an accredited institution may transfer up to 30 units upon review and recommendation of the faculty in the area of emphasis, and approval of the Graduate Coordinator of the School of Art, Design and Art History. Candidates must be prepared to spend at least two semesters (24 units) in residence as full-time students. Course work taken as a graduate student to fulfill undergraduate deficiencies may not be used to satisfy any unit requirement for the MFA degree program. A 3.0 grade point average must be maintained at all times. Continuation in the program will be determined by a review of each candidate by graduate faculty in the emphasis area. This review will be held upon completion of 30 units in the MFA program, or at any time upon request of the Graduate Coordinator.

THESIS PROJECTS IN ART - M. A. & M.F.A.

The Project required for the Master of Arts and Master of Fine Arts degree in Studio Arts is an original body of work of creative art, accompanied by a written report. All written reports accepted in satisfaction of the requirement for MA and MFA degrees are catalogued and accessioned in the University Library. Color slides of the project must be provided by the candidate and are retained in the School?s Slide Library. In addition there will be an oral examination of each MFA candidate by the graduate faculty of the School of Art, Design and Art History. This examination will occur during the candidate's graduate exhibition, and will encompass an in-depth discussion of the candidate's thesis project.
