Welcome Students
This is the start of a very interesting, challenging and difficult year for all of us at SDSU. There are fewer classes available; there are fewer campus services, fewer days when staff and faculty will be on campus. Faculty and students cannot achieve the same educational gains and student learning objectives that would be possible if the state had not made mandatory furloughs necessary. Students and their families are paying substantially more for this reduction in services. If the Governor tries to tell us that the budget was balanced without raising taxes, he is misleading us. We are all paying for the state's inability to pass a reasonable budget. Every one of us is frustrated and angry with a thoroughly dysfunctional state government.
Even with all of our frustrations, there is something that is inviolable. Something that remains, as it should be. That is your relationship with your faculty member. The interaction of the teacher and the student over the subject is still at the center of our endeavor. The great contemporary artist Bruce Nauman has said, "All art thrives on its limitations." We can take the realities and make of them something unexpected, something wonderful. That is your overall assignment. I know that you will find levels of your own ability here this year that will surprise all of us. Our students in the School of Art, Design, and Art History have always risen to that challenge.
