The SDSU Downtown Gallery presents a site-specific installation by third-year M.F.A. candidate, Ashley Fenderson, titled Ghost. This installation is drawn directly from the artist’s relationship with the deserts of California, Nevada, Utah, and Arizona. For years, she has explored, mined, and literally captured these places as a method of meditation and art-making practice. Fenderson has created a monumental tumbleweed from smaller parts of dried flora associated with the desert. She has intertwined these materials with artifacts ranging from fur pelts to expired fireworks and snail shells, creating topography as rich and subtle as the desert itself. Juxtaposed with a video created in the field, Fenderson’s installation seduces the senses and brings the mysteries of the outdoors inside.

On display in our loading dock space, known as Station B (formerly Art in the Dock), Ghost reinstates an exhibition program focusing on the work of SDSU graduate students. The name Station B connects the SDSU Downtown Gallery with the building’s historic role as Power Station B, an important component for the San Diego Electric Railway and SDG&E. We are delighted to welcome back this space after a brief hiatus.
