In partnership with the San Diego Museum of Art, SDSU presents a special evening with artist Nick Cave, moderated by Edward Goldman. Michele Schlect has generously underwritten Nick Cave’s visit to San Diego.

Nick Cave is an American artist working between the visual and performing arts through a range of media including sculpture, installation, performance, and video at the intersection of art and fashion. He is best known for his series of Soundsuits, colorful and fantastic creations that function as large-scale static sculptures as well as wearable camouflage, allowing the works to tell stories through dance and movement while concealing all aspects of gender, race and class. Cave spearheads the Graduate Program in the Department of Fashion at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and is an Alvin Ailey-trained dancer.

Also on view at the San Diego Museum of Art is Tim Shaw: Beyond Reason. Tim Shaw is an Irish artist, whose monumental sculptures are the result of a blend of contemporary and traditional British techniques. His multi-sensory, narrative works explore political landscapes and myth. Ticket holders to A Conversation with Nick Cave are invited to enjoy free entrance to the Museum on October 25, 2018, and extended hours through 6:00 pm.

Wearable Art Showcase
Monday, Dec. 10, 2018, 6:00 pm
Dance Studio Theatre, SDSU campus
Free admission

Students from The School of Art + Design and the Division of Dance will collaborate on a faculty-led project in response to a series of conversations with Fall 2018 Distinguished Visiting Artist, NickCave. Along with live video chat exchanges with Cave, students will share skills and methods to generate material and content, enhancing their collaborative process. Cave will interact with the students and their works in progress during an on campus visit in October. For this showcase, students will fabricate wearable art in response to movement, and compose performance pieces in response to the wearable constructions.
