The SDSU Downtown Gallery presents Party Lines: The History, Art, and Politics of Editorial Cartoons, an exhibition highlighting the work of Pulitzer Prize-winning political cartoonists and their contemporaries. The exhibition focuses on over four decades of cartoons created during presidential election years, from past races to 2016, through multiple perspectives, examining the art form as a conduit for awareness about political and social issues. Additionally, Party Lines elaborates on the history of editorial cartoons from the 19th century and the role of cartoons during women’s suffrage of the early 20th century.
Political cartoons and illustration have remained important throughout the changing state of newspaper and magazine publication. Party Lines continues the ongoing conversation around an art form that often calls us to look more closely at our society in a public forum. Included in the exhibition are Patrick Oliphant, Herb Block, Jeff MacNelly, Steve Breen, Lisa Benson, Matt Wuerker, and SDSU Alumnus Lalo Alcaraz, among others.
Party Lines is organized by the SDSU Downtown Gallery, in collaboration with Jim Tiffany. The exhibition and events are sponsored by Patti Roscoe and Jim Tiffany, Nikki and Ben Clay, Linda and Mel Katz, Una Davis and Jack McGrory, Karen and Kit Sickels, and The Frame Maker. Additional support is provided by the School of Art + Design, the College of Professional Studies and Fine Arts, and Arts Alive SDSU.
