Bio
Martin (Mix) Luera’s body of work encompasses a varied array of images and subject matters, attempting to offer the viewer a unique perspective on established themes. A self-proclaimed border artist, Martin has used history, culture, figure and representation to address the impact of his Mexican roots.
In his figurative paintings, Martin explores gender perceptions and expectations, depicting idealized male figures in situations and roles traditionally reserved for the female figure. As an artist involved in the LGBTQAI+ community, he examines established gender roles in society and their effect on our everyday lives.
Martin has been painting for over 20 years. He holds a BA in Fine Art from the University of San Diego and an MFA from San Diego State University. He currently divides his time between painting and teaching Art and Painting at San Diego State University and the University of San Diego. In addition, he is Associate Curator of Art of Pride, an organization that promotes and encourages LGBTQ artists.
