Bio

Ashley Kim is a new faculty of Ceramics at San Diego State University. Kim earned her BFA from Utah State University and her MFA from Indiana University, Bloomington. For the last several years, Kim has been enjoying handbuilding and incorporating a wide palette of colors and layers of textures and patterns in her functional work.

She believes that “Pottery saturates our world. Yet thoughtfully made functional pottery has the potential to enrich and elevate our daily domestic experience.”

Kim wants her work to play that role. Kim’s current research involves reusing various Styrofoam to-go boxes and commercial and medical plastic packagings to make plaster positives with which to create her forms. Then she uses ceramic decals for narrative imagery to highlight our current social and environmental issues.

Her work is featured in March/April 2019 issue of Pottery Making Illustrated and will be featured in the upcoming book called, Creative Adventures in Clay by Uppercase Publishing late 2020. Kim’s work can be seen at L’atelier Gallery and Mingei Museum Collectors Gallery in San Diego, Freehand Gallery in Los Angeles, and Red Lodge Clay Center in Montana, among others.
